Yellowstone National Park: Microbial Discoveries and Biotechnology in a SuperVolcano

Thermal environments have been a source of beneficial microorganisms, including the discovery of unique microorganisms and thermostable enzymes. This presentation will include a brief overview of Yellowstone thermal areas, and results of interdisciplinary geochemical and microbial investigations focused on characterization of unique microbial communities, microbes for enzyme discovery, and for algal biofuels applications.
The Thermal Biology Institute at Montana State University is focused on research and education of life in high temperature environments of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
